Victim: Pet, Other Arabian horse
Location: loose pit bulls attacked horse in his own paddock, Michigan
Year of attack: 2021

Tell us about the attack

We had just left to go to dinner, 6:15 pm ish, when we received a call from a neighbor that two pit bulls were chasing one of our horses. We told the neighbor to try to get the horse in the barn and we would be right home. While I was still on the phone with her, she went in the barn, it’s a run-in area, it was covered in blood. One dog was in her truck, the other one had left. When we arrived home, our horse was covered in blood, several bite wounds, his face, legs, chest, neck. It was bad. Called the police. Police released the pit bulls back to the owners. Owners got a dog-at-large harassing livestock ticket ($125.00). They were told repeatedly they are responsible for any and all bills. Horse will recover physically, but not mentally.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I am scared to leave the horses out in their paddocks, I am scared to be in my yard without a pistol. I called the shelter the dogs came from. The shelter director told me that the dogs’ owners promised they would NEVER be off leash: less then two months later, dogs are off leash. Dogs came from Detroit. One has cropped ears.

Legal Consequences
Owners received a fine for $125.00 plus the vet bill, when it’s finalized. Which they probably won’t pay and I will have to get an attorney

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
I love dogs, I even liked pit bulls. However after this gruesome attack on my horse, I am done with pit bulls AND their owners. Those dogs were bred for one reason, to attack “bulls” and the dog fight people have ruined the animals even further. They should be outlawed, OR every owner should have to carry a large insurance policy, and pay out pain and suffering at every attack.
