Tell us about the attack

I was walking home with my dog, who was on a leash, when out of nowhere a brindle pit bull came running out and grabbed him by the face and then the back leg. Immediately I rushed to pry off the pit bull’s jaws, but he was grinding and repetitively clenching harder and harder into the flank muscles of my medium-sized dog who was howling in fear and pain. He lost bowel control and was bleeding, but even with the owner on his pit bull trying to pry open the pit’s jaws and my hands in the pit bull’s mouth as well it would not release. But we kept at it, until finally and mercifully the pit bull’s jaws were able to be pulled off. In shock I took my dog to the vet and he was cared for with his deep puncture wounds and cuts to his face. Currently, he is in massive shock and completely dissociated but alive.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
It happened today, and my fingers are numb and I am also in shock.  It could easily have been a child or adult, or he could have killed my dog.

Legal ramifications

I am waiting to hear about restitution and a court case decision. Montana law states that the owner is responsible for any liability caused by their dog attacking anyone whether on owner’s property, or public property. These animals should be banned like they are in other states and cities. Pit bulls are incredibly dangerous and deadly.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?

We were walking quietly down a public access alley, leashed and in no way drawing attention to ourselves.  The pit bull’s owners said that in seven years it had never shown this side before. Pit bulls are incredibly dangerous and should be regulated, and we should never, ever “make nice” about them and think they can be safe. The pit bull’s behavior is completely unacceptable.
