Tell us about the attack
My friend was building a garage and I had walked over with my dog on a leash to check on the progress. At that same time another friend arrived. I turned my back to say hello. Suddenly from out of nowhere two pit bulls charged and attacked my dog. My friends jumped in and separated the dogs and got my dog out of the jaws of one of the pit bulls. One of my friends ended up with a deep slice to his finger. My dog had to have surgery and remained at vet under care for about 3 days. The vet bill was over $1,100.00.
How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I have been so uneasy over this whole situation. I was shaking this morning thinking about it.
Legal Consequences
I had high hopes of being able to work with the owner. I left a note on his door to contact me. He did not call. I was eventually able to find him at home and hoped to have a conversation about the incident. The owner was not cooperative at all. I then filed a incident report with the sheriff’s office. There is no animal control department as it is a very small community. I’m not even sure the rabies vaccine is current for the attacking pit bulls. Nothing has been done with the pit bulls, nor has the owner accepted responsibility. I am now attempting to contact a lawyer to determine legal options. Most likely it will become at least a small claims case.
What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
These pit bulls roam freely in the neighborhood daily and everyone seems to have accepted that. In talking with the neighbors, though, several of us have experienced aggressive behavior from these pit bulls. Be very careful: you never know when these pit bulls are going to attack. Even owners have been killed by their own pit bulls.
