Tell us about the attack

As finishing our walk, my two little dogs on leashes and me, almost at our house, I looked over my shoulder and saw a large pit bull moving low & fast toward us. We froze. I pride myself on my ability to stave off aggressive dogs. But this happened so fast. No noise, no growl or bark. Suddenly the pit bull was there and locked onto the abdomen of my 12 LB Rat Terrier/ Chihuahua Chico, my precious 2 year old who was always by my side. A kind, intelligent, fun and loving dog. I started screaming at the top of my lungs, screaming and kicking. My husband came running out and jumped on the pit bull. He is 250 lbs and 6’3” and he could not release the jaws. He cut off the pit bull’s air supply which finally forced the animal to release. We ran to ER. Nothing to be done. We were all bit by the pit bull. I’m still in shock with PTSD. The pit bull will be released back to its owner, as it was just its first bite on record.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I’m now terrified. I walked my dogs all of the time and dealing with bad dogs was something that happened, but not at this scale. I’m told by many that they carry tasers because of pit bulls. I feel like I had a huge safety hole in my animal awareness that I was unaware of. I so wish I had known.

Legal Consequences
I don’t know all of the details other than they told me that when they call the pit bull owner she just swears at them and hangs up. And that if she doesn’t come to claim the pit bull they will decide what to do.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Protect your animals, be ready. I was standing in the middle of a street and no one was coming to help me. What if I hadn’t been in front of my own home? No pit bull or other animal will ever do this to my loved ones again.
