Rescue pit bull attacked without warning

Name: Dianne Keith
Victim: Adult
Location: In my home, Pennsylvania
Year of attack: 2021

Tell us about the attack

In May of last year, 2020, my son’s girlfriend adopted a rescue pit bull mix from Centre County PAWS animal shelter in State College, Pennsylvania. She just loved and spoiled this dog and had even taken him for ice cream the day before the attack.

It was a normal morning on April 11th, 2021. The pit bull was sitting on the living room couch when my son went to start to make breakfast in the kitchen. Suddenly, the pit bull jumped off the couch and went into a full on attack on my son. When his girlfriend ran in to get the pit bull off him, it turned on her. The attack continued. She got away outside and the pit bull got out of the door and continued to attack her again outside. My son ran out after her; the pit bull turned on him again. He managed to drag the pit bull still latched to him into his garage where he had to beat him off of him to let him go. The pit bull has been euthanized.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
They are traumatized and she has PTSD over it. My son received 38 stitches in both forearms and she received 43 in both upper arms and hands and back. They are both currently unable to work.

Legal Consequences
There are no legal issues as this was their own pet that turned on them. They were taken to hospital by ambulance, and the state troopers attended the scene,  but we found out later that it was never reported as a dog attack, and we don’t know why. Not one agency in this state of Pennsylvania would help us get the dog out of there and they told us it was our problem and their hands were tied????

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Pit bulls should be outlawed and not allowed to be bred. This breed needs to be extinguished at all costs. These animals can not be trusted no matter how nice you think they are. This was a completely unprovoked attack on its owners who gave him the world. There is no warning, no growls, or barks. You won’t even see it coming. To any family with small children, don’t be ignorant! It could cost you your child’s life or your own. “Is it worth it”?

Pomeranian

Trespassing person’s pit bull mauls teacup Pomeranian and injures its owner

Name: NS
Victim: Pet
Location: Pet owner’s front lawn, Illinois
Year of attack: 2020

Tell us about the attack

I had just come in from a walk with my teacup Pomeranian, “Chai”, as I put him down and unclipped his harness in the lobby of my business I reached for my phone on the desk and as soon as I turned around to pick him up again Chai began alerting and dashed into the front yard. I went running after him and saw him start approaching the man walking on our lawn with his pit bull. The man stood there as my dog was alerting and instead of walking on, he let his dog continue provoking mine. The pit bull yanked his owner so hard he slid forward nearly three feet, almost throwing him down, and in that instant the pit bull knocked over my dog and bit him and began to shake him violently. I began to fight with it, where it finally released and the man and pit bull ran away.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I lost my only companion that was attached to my side from 2016 until his death in 2020. He was the most important life force from waking up to falling asleep everyday. I am totally traumatized at both his loss and the playback of the violent last moment we saw each other. My hand was injured while I was trying to pry open the pit bull’s mouth and attempting to hit it over the head. I am a machinist and the lack of hand strength means I cannot do my job properly, let alone mow the lawn for the past week after the accident.

Legal Consequences
The police refuse to charge the man with trespassing or name him directly on the report, but instead identified the owner of the business where he works. They told me that it would “severely limit the guys freedoms” if I pressed trespassing on him, and they refused it. They also did not list the dog as a pit bull, but instead as a “lab-mix”. My local police also refused to take another of my neighbor’s complaints for trespassing on their property also by the same individual and his pit bull… The local police told me they are passing the investigation to Dupage County Animal Control Sherriff. Local cop threatened he could/but won’t blame me for leash laws, however it is not applicable as this all occurred on my lawn and due to the trespassing and provocation of the pit bull’s owner.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Pit bulls should be banned. The death toll and injury count of innocent people is rising by the day. There is no way that law enforcement, the legal system, public activism through social media will ever solve this problem.

Australian shepherd

Pit Bull Attacked My Dog

Name: Laurie
Victim: Pet
Location: Home, Arkansas
Year of attack: 2021

Tell us about the attack

My daughter’s friend asked her to dogsit her pit bull puppy which she claimed was very sweet and got along great with other dogs. I was in the other room. Suddenly I heard my dog, an Aussie Collie, yelping and my daughter screaming. The 1.5 year old pit bull had run up behind my dog, utterly unprovoked, and had him by the neck, refusing to let go. After trying to pull the pit bull off by his harness and hitting him repeatedly on the nose with a heavy object, I applied pressure on both sides of his jaw and he released.

I have posted about this on social media and have been somewhat assaulted by lies about how great pit bulls are and how misinformed I am. In fact, I used to be misinformed before and have now read much more. I only wish I had known the truth about pit bulls before.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I have suffered from extreme tiredness, back pain, arm pain and bruising. I have been doubly traumatized by the negative comments I received as well. I’m more afraid when walking my dog. My dog can’t wear a leash or go walking much since he has neck injuries. I’m glad I know now to avoid this breed as much as possible and hope to help others know this too.

Legal Consequences
We don’t have the owner’s exact address to report the pit bull. I may still try. She paid vet bills and says she is having the pit bull evaluated.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
This breed is responsible for 66% of fatal attacks, although they are only 6% of dogs. They were always bred for fighting. It’s a natural instinct of them now — no matter how they’re trained or raised. Pit bulls often attack unprovoked after years of showing no signs of aggression. Avoid them at all costs. Support laws to ban them. Don’t believe the lies. Read further. Pit bull advocates are relentless in trying to defend pit bulls and downplay the serious risk they pose. They often don’t know the truth themselves.

screen door

Pit bull puppy attack in Hope, Michigan on Wixom Lake

Name: Frieda [1]
Victim: Adult
Location: Knocking on neighbor’s door, Hope, Michigan
Year of attack: 2018

Tell us about the attack

Frieda, about 70 to 75 years old, went to the house of her friends, Jane and John [1], who live on my street. She knocked on their door to talk to Jane and their pit bull puppy viciously attacked her through the screen door and began mauling her. She had to have stitches and spend the night in the hospital.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I’ve been spending my time trying to figure out how to make my neighbors get rid of that dog. I want to know how to make it illegal to own a pit bull in my community, Hope, Michigan. They are killers.

Legal Consequences
This story happened in March 2018 in Hope, Michigan and the police were called. I cannot find it in the attack database here on NPBVA. Since a police report was made at the hospital how do I get Frieda’s story in this database? Not one thing happened. Frieda didn’t sue since her husband was dying, but John and Jane bought her some bandaids and took her out for dinner, so that made everything right I guess. Why wasn’t that dog put down? I want that dog gone before it bites me or my little boys, but they refuse to get rid of this killer dog.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
STOP SAYING IT’S THE OWNER! It’s not, it’s the breed! This pit bull was a puppy, it had been around Frieda several times and was familiar with her since Jane, and Frieda were friends. John and Jane have small grandchildren so in no way was this pit bull being trained to be aggressive. THESE ANIMALS DO NOT BELONG AS PETS OR IN A COMMUNITY WHERE THEY CAN HURT CHILDREN, or ANYONE FOR THAT MATTER.

Goats

Livestock Nightmare

Name: Last small town farmer
Victim: 3 Mother Nigerian Dwarf Goats and all 5 of their 7 week old kids
Location: On my farm, Bell County, Texas
Year of attack: 2021

Tell us about the attack

3 pit bulls came on my property on February 17th, 2021, and within minutes, ripped the fencing off the barn, killed all the babies and quite literally ripped all the moms apart.

The moms all died within 2 days from the horrific injuries.

This has been devastating and a mental nightmare. Something I wish no one would ever have to see.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I can’t sleep, spending money for a pen to put inside of my 8 acres that is already fenced for added protection, just to keep my agriculture status. Out $4,000.00 in killed livestock Already $2,000.00 in livestock panels and post, and still have to buy more livestock.

Legal Consequences
No consequences for the owner of the 3 pit bulls, even though microchips identified the owner. That will teach him (Bell County Texas). Thanks for the service and protection!

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Pet owners need to be responsible and need to held accountable!

light brown pit bull

Leah’s Story

Name: Olwin Ortiz
Victim: Pet
Location: On the street, Deltona, Florida
Year of attack: 2021

Tell us about the attack

On the night of March 17th, 2021, I was taking my dog Leah for our nightly walk. At the corner of Cascade Street and Belltower Street, a big light brown pit bull viciously attacked my dog. I tried my best to defend my dog, by punching, kicking even hitting the pit bull with its own collar, but it did not release my dog until a man came out. At that point, the pit bull released and the man chased the pit bull away. At that moment, I did not see where the pit bull went, but another man came out, helped me with a towel, and told me the pit bull came out from the house next to him on Cascade Street and that man was the owner, after he told me he did not know where they came from. My neighbor also showed up in a bike and later I found out that pit bull belongs to his mother.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I can’t sleep, all I see is that demon pit bull attacking my Leah.

Legal Consequences
Owners are hiding the pit bull. I’m working with Animal Control and the city of Deltona.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Be very vigilant with your dogs. Do not trust anyone, dog nor human…. Carry a weapon specially at night. [Editor: Check with local authorities on the legalities for the jurisdiction you live in.]

Blighted street

My life-changing ordeal with a pit bull in Georgia

Name: Melanie Kemp
Victim: Adult
Location: On street, Georgia
Year of attack: 2018

Tell us about the attack

I was walking down the street with overcast weather and it was a little wet. I saw the pit bull but did not think in a million years that she would attack me. I was so shocked when she started running towards me and it immediately grabbed onto my leg with her mouth going all the way around my right leg. She proceeded to bite me and would not let go. I worked with animals for a long time and I never have been attacked or anything violent happened to me in any of my Animal Hospital jobs. She started biting me on my left leg and moved from my upper thigh to my arms. She was trying to get up to my neck and I’m screaming at the top of my lungs for somebody to help me. I was fortunate enough to catch a friend’s attention down the street and he saved me.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
My life has been extremely different. I was in the hospital for almost two weeks because of this attack. I have nightmares and I wake up screaming. As a result of this pit bull attack I lost my mind and pretty much went crazy after it happened. I was wanting to sue whoever I could but I was not able to make that happen. Where it happened was not a good neighborhood.

Legal Consequences
I did not call the police. However, when I called an ambulance to take me to the hospital after the attack, the police were subsequently involved. The pit bull was put down because she was too vicious. And I live with scars on both legs and both arms.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
I still love dogs however I am scared of any dog to this day. I hope I can eventually get over this fear.

64 year old woman attacked by neighbor's pit bulls

3 pit bulls maul 64-year-old woman and her 7-month-old Corgi, Arizona

Name: V.G.
Victim: Adult, Pet
Location: In my fenced yard, Arizona
Year of attack: 2018

Tell us about the attack

A neighbor’s three pit bulls dug under several fences and came in my yard. They knocked me down, severely mauling me. Muscle in my right arm was destroyed and tendons severed. My left ear was torn away and I had several bites on my head and face. While biting my head, one pit bull violently shook it. They bit my neck and the jugular vein was exposed. I had many bites over my entire body. They also mauled my 7-month-old Corgi pup.

I was taken to a Level 1 trauma center and underwent a 4-hour surgery. After surgery, I faced intense physical therapy. Additional surgery was required to restructure the ear canal. I’m left with permanent physical handicaps of my right arm and hearing. My Corgi had surgery to repair his neck, shoulder and belly.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I live in fear now of large dogs, especially pit bulls. When I see one, I suffer panic attacks. I’m afraid to go out into my own yard. I’ve had to change how I do things. I’m able to write, but the right arm has little strength due to lack of muscle. This arm is significantly smaller than the left. I try to do things like opening jars or carrying groceries with the left arm, but this too is difficult. Even a couple years later, the scars are irritated, red and itchy as they have developed keloids. Despite ear canal restructure, hearing is a challenge. Doctors feel that it’s due to nerve damage from the head injuries that’s not repairable.

Legal Consequences
Despite the owner of the pit bulls petitioning for their return, the court ordered them euthanized.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
These dogs are not to be trusted and are extremely dangerous. Pit bulls are bred to fight to the death. They love to fight and bite. My daughter was mauled about 30 years ago by a neighbors’ pit bull/black lab cross without reason. This dog was raised by a good family and had not been abused. I’ve seen another neighbor’s pit bull turn on his Mastiff. The Mastiff suffered severe injury as he was torn apart. There are many other similar stories of the dangers of this breed and people have died. All dogs have certain instinctual traits — such as herding dogs, etc. The pit bull is a fighter. They should never be considered as a family pet, and especially if there are children. They are time-bombs just waiting to go off.

Small terrier attacked by pit bull, 2020.

Small terrier attacked by pit bull, Pennsylvania

Name: Phil
Victim: Pet
Location: Public park (not dog park), Pennsylvania
Year of attack: 2020

Tell us about the attack

I was walking my dog at approximately 9 p.m. in a grassy area across the street from my house. All of a sudden I saw a loose pit bull running across the street. The pit bull was laser focused on my small dog and grabbed its abdomen and started shaking and biting it as if it was prey. The (I later learned) foster person ran over and helped remove the pit bull. My dog barely survived after emergency surgery. I found out the pit bull was known to be dog aggressive, but despite that was still placed in a foster home in a dense, urban area without fenced back yards and with many dogs the pit bull would need to be walked around. The shelter called us once they got our number and wanted me to convince the foster to still adopt the pit bull. Instead, I asked that the pit bull be put down, but was rebuffed by the shelter and vet as if I was crazy.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I have been completely traumatized and extremely disturbed to see the increase in aggressive and untrained pit bulls in our neighborhood. I think it is the combination of people wanting to adopt dogs during COVID-19, and shelters only having pit bulls available because they are so over represented in shelters. I have also become an advocate for dangerous dog and pit bull bans. I also think that zero mistake dogs should be put down after their first near fatal or fatal attack.

Legal Consequences
I do not think the foster adopted this pit bull. I assume the shelter adopted it out to someone else.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
I would like people to realize pit bulls are not pets and should not be adopted. They should all be spayed and neutered and live out their lives in controlled environments, such as animal shelters.

Scottie dog

Pit bull viciously attacked our Scottie terrier

Name: Griff
Victim: Pet
Location: Walking on street in our neighborhood, Indiana
Year of attack: 2021

Tell us about the attack

Last week, March 2, 2021, at approximately between 16:00 & 16:30 our Scottie Terrier “Willie” was viciously attacked by an unleashed pit bull when a white male 30-40 yrs of age with long dark brown beard & shoulder length hair, dressed only in boxer shorts, opened the front door of the residence which he & two other men rent from its owner. The pit bull ran out of the house and immediately attacked Willie, first grabbing his neck. We wrestled the pit bull. It let go, then viciously bit Willies’ back causing two severe bites. We finally got our dog free. By the grace of God neither my wife or I were bitten. The man did not try to help us. Instead he monologued, “its not my dog”…”I don’t know who it belongs to”. We rushed Willie to immediately to our vet. He suffered deep puncture wounds and ripped tissue. Vet bill $650.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
First we are no longer tolerant or sympathetic with the pit bull breed. The attack on our dog was deliberate and unprovoked. The pit bull was trying to kill our dog. Know that I’m 68 years old and grew up with dogs, horses & livestock. That pit bull meant to kill our dog, so now my wife and I carry BEAR SPRAY. Pepper spray is ineffective against pit bulls or any other breed of dog. The advantage of Bear Spray is the range of 30 to 35 feet and its ability to deter a 1500 lb Grizzly. Added to it is our Conceal/Carry permits and a Platinum membership with USCCA. We will not hesitate to spray and or shoot if necessary if we are ever attacked again. Again we are no longer tolerant of pit bulls or their owners or the fairy tales spread about the breed being “sweet” or “harmless”.

Legal Consequences
The home owner, owner of the pit bull and the man who released the dog have all been cited by our city animal control officers, who are in fact police officers. A police report has been filed and we will pursue all those responsible for the attack in civil court for our vet bill and damages.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Please arm yourselves with Bear Spray 9.2 ounce cans. Most come with holsters for your belt. Also recommend carrying a good sized knife such as a K Bar or other 6″ blade. If practical get a Conceal/Carry gun permit & a membership with USCCA. [Editor: Check with local authorities on the legalities for the jurisdiction you live in]. Make sure your pet is on a leash. Stay on the street that is city property. Check with new home owners or renters for new pets in the neighborhood. We had walked past the house many, many times over the years and had never seen any dogs. We had learned that recently three men had rented the home, but we had no idea they had a pit bull. If you are attacked by a pit bull or any other dog be sure call 911, or call to file a Police Report. In our city the Police notify Animal Control for you. Important.
