Pit bull

Pit bull attacks with no warning or provocation and tears victim’s lip off

Name: Otto Snow
Victim: Adult
Location: Walking on the street. Bangor, Maine
Year of attack: 2018

Tell us about the attack

My friend and I were walking along the street in the neighborhood. We were going to get some pizza. We could see an unleashed pit bull running in the street ahead of us. As we walked by the driveway, the man was playing with a very excited pit bull at the top of the driveway near the garage. We exchanged small talk and kept walking. I glanced back and I thought that I saw the man putting a leash on the pit bull in the driveway, as though to take it for a walk. My friend and I kept walking. My friend stopped and turned. I then did the same, and the pit bull lunged from out of the blue and tore my lip off. I fell to the ground and covered my face from further attack. The owner of the pit bull said to me that his pit bull had “never done that before.”

I was brought to the hospital for emergency surgery.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?

It destroyed my life. I am losing everything. I am now getting help outside of the area and state. My ventures to bring tech, publishing and support groups to this area of the state have now collapsed.

Legal Consequences
It is under litigation.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
If you want to own a tiger, fine. Just make sure that it is on a chain, that you are responsible, and if it harms others, you take responsibility or are prepared to be held responsible. Accountability. People who are irresponsible should not own tigers or pit bulls for that matter. Landlords/property owners need to be held responsible.

Neighbor’s loving, affectionate pit bull attacks with no warning

Name: A.D.
Victim: Adult
Location: Neighbors yard, Maine
Year of attack: 2022

Tell us about the attack

I have been friends with my neighbor for 24 years and we have been neighbors for the past 17. Two years ago she bought a pit bull from the Humane Society. I go over their home often since we live right across from each other, and I know their dogs pretty well.

On Memorial Weekend 2022, I walked over to her house to talk about having a BBQ. She had her pit bull on a leash. I said hi to the pit bull, as I always do, and started talking to my friend.

Within a minute with no warning or provocation her pit bull had jumped, seized my arm in its mouth, pulled me to the ground, and would not let go.

I was so stunned but I didn’t panic. I just kept saying please get your animal off my arm. I ended up with a level 4 bite. 9 deep marks with stitches.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I have been having severe panic attacks anytime I see a dog now. I have muscle and nerve damage in my left arm.

Legal Consequences
The pit bull was put down by owners 13 days after the bite happened. The pit bull owner was not fined.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
This pit bull was supposedly loving, playful, affectionate and out of nowhere it attacked. Please keep your children away from pit bulls. If this was my daughter she would have been killed.
