Tell us about the attack

I was walking my dog went around a corner one block from my house. A pit bull ran off a porch, and attacked me and my dog. I had my dog picked up to my waist trying to keep the pit bull from hurting her. The pit bull bit my right forearm and hand, partially amputated my right index finger, and punctured my left hand fingers and left forearm. Eight surgeries and now complete amputation of right index finger, years of physical therapy, nerve pain, rabies shot series, financial devastation from the medical costs.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
Financially, I lost my job, retirement savings, and incurred medical bills exceeding $300,000 dollars. I have pain all the time. I am limited to no use of right hand, limited use of left hand. Years of seeing a physiotherapist. My family has been affected by this also. It has been very difficult.

Are there any funds to help victims of pit bulls? Anyone who has information on who I need to talk to, please let me know.

Legal Consequences
The pit bull was put down as this was its third attack. The pit owner didn’t even get a fine, not that that money would have come to me, anyway.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Be aware of what pit bulls are in your area.

Living a nightmare after pit bulls snatch puppy off leash

Name: Amy
Victim: Adult, Pet
Location: My front yard, Delaware
Year of attack: August 24, 2019

Tell us about the attack
August 24, 2019, I was walking my puppy on his leash in my front yard. The neighbor’s 2 pit bulls jumped their fence, one jumped at me, the other snatched my puppy off the leash. Then they both attacked him. My parents had just arrived. My dad laid in the horn for the neighbors to come. I could watch…I couldn’t help. My puppy had a $1,500 vet bill and spent 6 months on quarantine because they failed to vaccinate their dogs (my puppy wasn’t old enough for his vaccine to be in his system for 21 days). The neighbors response was “if my pit bulls wanted to kill your dog they would’ve”.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
Some days my pup’s back leg still bothers him. He still cries when he hears their pit bulls. It was months before he could be outside if another dog barked. I still have nightmares and flashbacks. I was in therapy. I can’t park in my driveway I share with them, so I park on the street. I carry mace. I can’t be in my front yard. I know if they attack again I may well be dead. I know if it happens again there is nothing I can do if the mace doesn’t work and I won’t be able to save him or me.

Legal Consequences
The neighbors were fined for their pit bulls being outside of their yard, for not having rabies shots and not being licensed in the state they were living in. No penalty for attacking my puppy… and, they’re not legally considered dangerous.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
It doesn’t matter how much a pit’s owner tells you they’re gentle. They can attack at any moment. We were on my property. They jumped the fence. Pits are not confined by fences. People do DNA tests on their dogs to see what their temperament is… but when it comes to pit bulls they ignore the violence and damage they can cause.

Do NOT allow your child to be near pit bulls. Build the highest fence the county or state will allow. You cannot trust a breed that causes 68-72% of the human fatalities. Animals are mauled daily, people are attacked and children are disfigured. They’re not a “misunderstood” breed. Their bloodline was created to kill. Are you the parent, aunt, uncle, grandparent, friend who wants to attend a closed casket funeral because a pit bull killed a child and their body is mauled?
