Trauma-room nurse speaks: life flight required after 2-year-old boy severely mauled by family pit bull

Name: RRT
Victim: Child
Location: Home, North Carolina
Year of attack: 2022

Tell us about the attack

I work in the emergency room of a rural hospital and witnessed the aftermath of a mauling caused by a pit bull. The victim was a 2-year-old little boy who had the majority of his cheek ripped off and his left ear partially severed. The victim had to be airlifted out of our hospital due to the extensive nature of his injuries and the doctor’s suspicion that a facial nerve had been severed due to left-sided facial drooping. Truly a horrific thing to witness. The pit bull belonged to the boyfriend of the boy’s mother.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I see trauma cases but seeing the cheek tissue of a little boy hanging off his face was very hard to witness.

Legal Consequences
Unknown

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Pit bulls should not be allowed around small children

Neighbor’s pit bull attacks child in stroller and dog

Tuesday October 4, 2022, I took my 11-month-old girl for a stroll in her stroller around the block with our 2-year-old Blue Merle Aussie, named Mabel. During our short walk, a pit bull mix broke through the fencing of a neighbor’s yard and aggressively ran at my child’s stroller. I stepped in the way and the pit bit into my right hand, lacerating and puncturing my finger. Our Aussie stepped in between to protect my daughter and me. The pit was relentless, ripping and shredding Mabel’s underbelly region, tearing chunks of tissue off the bone of her legs and leaving puncture markers all over her body. I fought with everything I had to get the pit mix off her to no avail! Thankfully a neighbor offered a rake and honked a car horn to scare off the pit. Mabel was rushed to an ER for surgery and I required medical care for my hand.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
Sadly Mabel will forever have mobility limitations due to the attack. My daughter was traumatized by the experience.

I don’t think I will ever feel safe again walking in the neighborhood without a weapon and pepper spray.

Legal Consequences
The owner was given a warning for not fencing the dog properly. More legal action will be taken but at this time the owners were given a warning and all I could do was write a complaint to animal control.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Pit bulls are killing machines; once they start a fight they won’t stop until they kill. They are unpredictable and will attack unprovoked, sadly attacking even children.

Pit bull

Family pet pit bull in loving home turns on child

Tell us about the attack

On Sunday, June 26th 2022 I was attacked by our pet pit bull.

There was a small propane torch leaking in my room. I’m freaking out because me and my mom have always been afraid of that stuff, so I ran out of my room and then I opened the gate at the end of the stairs and I heard the growl, the growl that I knew wasn’t a playful growl, and a look in our pit bull’s eyes that I’ve never seen before.

A I quickly turned so he wouldn’t get my face or throat, I tried to get back up the stairs before he actually locked onto me but I couldn’t. He got my leg. The pet that’s been in the same house with me for more then a year was just hanging off my leg, ripping, tearing parts of my leg that I didn’t even know could hurt, feeling his teeth graze my bone and watching Zach stress trying to get the pit bull off of me.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
My sweet 16 was completely different then it was supposed to be.  I had a hole in my leg instead of my driving permit in my hand. I’ve learned so much through all of this. It’s made me so so much stronger. It’s made me realize so much that I can’t fully explain yet because everything’s hitting all at once.

They didn’t think they were gonna save my leg. That’s terrifying for a teenager to find out. I was just so thankful and lucky to be alive. And blessed it wasn’t one of my siblings.

Legal Consequences
On June 27th 2022 we surrendered all rights to the pit bull.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
It doesn’t matter how you raise a pit bull what so ever. It’s wired into their brain.

Pit bull

A pit bull destroyed my son’s future

Name: Tracy Montgomery
Victim: Child, Pet
Location: In our back yard, Michigan
Year of attack: 2021

Tell us about the attack

My son Dexter and his dog were outside on November 16th, 2021 about 5:30 pm in our own backyard. This girl was walking her two pit bulls in the nearby park. One got away from her. I screamed to my son, “get your dog in now”. But by the time I got to the back door, the pit bull was already attacking my son’s dog. My son was fighting off the pit bull. Once the pit bull let go, my boyfriend grabbed Dexter’s dog and brought him inside. Then the pit bull went for my son. My son got mauled by the pit bull in the throat. He was in ICU for days on a ventilator.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?

We are scared to let our dog outside anymore into our backyard due to other pit bulls in the park.

My son’s life totally changed. With his vocal cords and air channel punctured, he has a hard time breathing and gasps in the mornings. He has to watch what he eats. He dropped out of school. The modeling that he wanted to do also is done for, owing to the scars on his throat.

We have bad anxiety and bad depression because we feel like no one want to help us.

Legal Consequences
The trailer park did nothing. We are fighting to have the pit bull put down. The female pit bull owner hid the pit bull and acted like she didn’t own any. Court has been being postponed 7 months now, it is just frustrating.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
People ain’t getting insurance on their pit bulls, so you can’t sue them. Honestly, I think there should be a change.

Please fight against pit bulls being used as service dogs:  they attack pets, children, elderly people, etc.

Pit bull

Babysitter’s pit bull mauls boy

Name: T.P.
Victim: Child
Location: Babysitters, Ohio
Year of attack: 2021

Tell us about the attack

My son Liam is now 6. He was mauled by a pit when he was 5 years old.

The babysitter failed to tell me that she had a pit bull.

The pit bull had previously attacked two other children. Despite this, the babysitter and her husband decided to introduce Liam to the pit bull after I left.

I’m told it then pounced on Liam and ate him alive. The pit bull owners let my son lay there in blood and feces for an hour and didn’t even call 911. They let him lay there. Screaming and crying: scared.

Liam had severe lacerations, a broken jaw, a skull fracture, and a brain bleed. He required plastic surgery and tear duct repair. He now he has trauma-induced epilepsy as a result of the attack: he has 50-200 seizures a day sometimes. He is considered  permanently disabled.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
My life will never be the same, neither will his; or his siblings. We are terrified of dogs now. Myself, and Liam have been diagnosed with PTSD. Liam is on epilepsy medication and will forever deal with the consequences of their stupidity.

Legal Consequences

The registered owner of the pit bull was the babysitter’s husband. He was charged only with misdemeanor child endangerment. His wife, the actual babysitter, faced no charges at all.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
DO NOT TRUST PIT BULLS. Don’t risk something like this! It’s definitely not how you raise them either! I’m pretty certain this pit bull wasn’t “trained or raised” to eat children!

A pit bull ate my daughter’s nose in unprovoked attack

Name: Brandy Watson
Victim: Child
Location: On our porch, Ohio
Year of attack: 2019

Tell us about the attack

In 2019, my 11-year-old daughter was attacked by a pit bull. My husband, my daughters, 1 of my husband’s cousin’s kids and I were all on my porch. The pit bull came over from a neighbor’s place and attacked my daughter for no reason with no provocation or warning.

She had 2 bites on her stomach, 1 bite on right hand, 2 bites to her face. The one bite on her face was the worst. The pit bull ate a chunk of her nose. She was lucky she was wearing her glasses. If she wasn’t she would have lost an eye that day.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
My daughter is still terrified of dogs. She gets stomach aches and sweating when they get near her.

Legal Consequences

After two-and-a-half years, we finally won a $300,000 lawsuit.

The pit bull owner, who was 18 years old at the time, didn’t want to put the pit bull down but her parents made her. But now, she owns two more pit bulls.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
While in theory it might be true that any dog can bite, pit bulls are way by far the most likely to, and are aggressively violent when they do.

Young girl on swing

9-year-old girl mauled to death by family pet pit bull raised from pup

Name: Grieving Auntie
Victim: Child, Pet
Location: Residence, Indiana
Year of attack: 2010

Tell us about the attack

I’ve unfortunately had numerous pit bull issues / attacks / maulings happen to either a loved one, myself or a family pet.

When I was a teenager, our tiny neighborhood that I grew up in had a pit bull that would often get loose and try to attack us. I had to climb onto a car one time. This pit bull eventually bit me in the thigh. Luckily I only got a small puncture wound. And I know now that I was very lucky.

A few years ago, our dog was attacked by four pit bulls who jumped our fence. Luckily she survived.

But the worst was the loss of my niece in 2010 at the age of nine, killed by her family’s pet pit bull.

My niece was just letting the dogs outside for their morning potty time when the pit bull decided instead to maul her, going for her throat. She did nothing to provoke the demon  animal. This animal was not abused. Their dogs were not used for “protection “ and they did not come from a fighting ring. My sister and brother-in-law did not raise the pit bull lovingly from a pup to do this.  I know for a fact that my sister and brother-in-law would never have gotten the pit bulls (as puppies) if they’d have known the outcome.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
The loss of my niece is something I nor my family will ever get over. The horrific way she died made life too unbearable for her mother (my sister). Her body physically and mentally started failing her, I believe from a broken heart. The loss of your child leaves such a broken heart that some parents can’t handle.  My sister is one of those parents. She is now laying in a nursing home at the young age of 42. She has Severe Traumatic Brain Injury from a fall caused by a seizure. Never in her 42 years had she ever had a seizure before.  So essentially I’ve lost my niece and my best friend / sister.

Legal Consequences
My sister and brother-in-law had the pit bull put down within a couple of hours after it killed their daughter. No charges were brought against them.

What would you like people to know as a result of the attack?
I believe that your chances of being attacked by your own pit bull is far higher than people think it is. I hope that when the pit bull does attack, it’s not a innocent child or person and that if it’s you, that you survive. If you own a dog that is either full or part pit bull, take every precaution to protect yourself and others.

Severely mauled by my friends pit bulls in driveway

Severely mauled by my friend’s pit bulls in driveway

Name: Ciah
Victim: Child
Location: Drive way, New York
Year of attack: June 12th, 2021

Tell us about the attack

I was walking up the driveway into my friend’s house when her 100 pound pit bull and one large mastiff pit bull mix attacked me. They were biting every limb of me and pulling for an extended period of time. They did not stop when commanded and had to be physically beat off me. My arm was almost completely detached from my body and I was coughing up blood. Every limb was completely covered in blood and I could smell my soft tissue and thought I was going to die. I spent a week in ICU. I had multiple surgeries, bypass, intubation and ventilators and I still am not healed.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I have terrible PTSD that makes it so I can’t sleep and I will have ongoing physical injuries and health issues for the rest of my life.

Legal Consequences
The two pit bulls were destroyed and homeowners gave the maximum.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Aggressive pit bulls don’t deserve a second chance; the “first bite free” rule needs to go.

Pit bull from animal rescue turns into a nightmare

Tell us about the attack

We bought an Staffordshire pit bull terrier mix from the shelter in Indy 3 weeks prior. We had no issues other than he was showing some signs of being protective. The pit bull and my 10-year-old were sleeping when my 11-year-old went in with food to wake her brother up. She yelled at him and the dog started attacking her. Didn’t touch the food. I was in the bathroom and didn’t realize what was going on. I came running when I heard her screaming help mommy I don’t want to die. I don’t want to die. She was trying to get away. I got the pit bull off her and got bit myself. We rushed her to the Emergency. She was pale and freezing. She had wounds to both arms. She was so scared. We got there and found out the pit bull had broken her right arm. She was transported to Riley children’s hospital in Indy. They put her under to stitch her. She had to have 15 stitches between the two arms. They couldn’t cast the broken arm because of the puncture wounds.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
She has missed the last few weeks of art. It’s been rough on us. She thought she was going to die.

Legal Consequences
I told Animal Control to come get the pit bull. They did and then they lost him. I don’t know if they got him later or not. I don’t ever want to see it again.

The animal rescue shelter knew more about the pit bull’s past than they they told us. My daughter reminded me that they had told the people behind us that he would not be a good fit for them because they had a young child. The report they gave us instead when we adopted it was that it wasn’t good with other animals.

My daughter could have died because we tried to save a pit bull. I had to miss work. It’s been rough.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
You never know what’s going to happen

Year of attack: 2021

Tell us about the attack

Friday, September 10th, 2021. I got a call from my daughter’s father telling me to meet him at the hospital and all I can hear is my 5-year-old daughter screaming like I’ve never heard her before in the background. She was attacked by 1 of 4 dogs that her uncle (dad’s brother) owned. It was an unprovoked attack by a 9-month-old female pit-bull. When I arrived at the hospital, my daughter was crying of pain and agony and there was blood all over her. She had been bitten a dozen times from her lip, neck and her whole body. She was transported from Jennersville regional hospital to AI DUPONT Nemours children hospital for surgery to close several deep bite wounds. The plastic surgeon said one more centimeter more and her carotid artery would have been hit and this would have been fatal! 40+ stitches.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
All of our lives have been traumatized! My daughter missed over two weeks of school and has not been the same since! Already anxious before the attack, this has not helped. She has been sick and in pain, stomach issues and body aches. Her doctor says she is probably one of few kids that internalize PTSD and trauma and it’s making her body literally sick. We are seeking counseling with not great progress!

Legal Consequences
Because they were family and I know they didn’t want this to happen no fine or anything happened and I didn’t want to press charges! Although after having to pursue the homeowners for medical, I learned that a incident report was never made (only the ASPCA was contacted) so 6 weeks later I had to report it myself! The ASPCA officer I spoke to was so rude and actually victim-blamed my then 5-year-old daughter! I am still in shock and also hurt that that after everything her uncle still has the pit bull and is planning to keep the monster! I pray to god it’s never around another child again because I know it will definitely bite again!

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Do your research first and foremost! Most of the saying you’re hearing about pit bulls in general being safe is ABSOLUTELY FALSE! Pit bulls make up MORE than half of all fatal dog attacks and are known to turn on their owners making them incredibly dangerous around children!
