Man and dog wounded in predatory pit bull attack

Man and dog wounded in predatory pit bull attack

Name: JMS
Victim: Adult
Location: On the street walking my dog, California
Year of attack: 2020

Tell us about the attack
I was walking my 4 year-old female German Shepherd a few houses from being home. I saw a pit bull through a neighbor’s driveway gate looking at me and my dog. A man was walking toward the pass-through gate and I thought, “I hope he can control his pit bull because it looked like it wanted to attack my dog.” Next thing I knew the pit bull was outside the gate attacking my dog and clamping on. I grabbed the pit bull by the tail and pulled as hard as I could. It let go of my dog but turned around and bit me on the leg.

The pit bull owner got control of the pit bull after it bit me, but went back into his yard and never came back to see how I or my dog were doing. I was laying there bleeding, neighbors called 911 and police and fire department came and checked me over.

My dog went to the vet ER, I went to the ER and got my puncture wound treated. My dog has a lacerated leg and I am in pain (this happened 12 hours ago).

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
Too early to tell the long term effects because the pit bull attack was yesterday evening (12 hours ago). I did not trust pit bulls before, but now, even more, I think that cities should consider outlawing them within city limits and insurance companies should not insure homeowners who have pit bulls. I will always have the puncture scars to remind me of the danger of this type of dog.

Legal Consequences
Where I live Animal Control is very pro-active. The pit bull is already quarantined (10 days) and I will be able to find out whether it was current on rabies shots. I do not want that animal back in my neighborhood again. The pit bull owner will be held liable for the pain, suffering and medical bills caused by his vicious animal. The house where the pit bull was is worth well over a million dollars, so I expect the owner has insurance.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Do not trust pit bulls. If you know there are pit bulls on the route you are walking, bring along pepper spray or a baseball bat for protection.

Pit bull comes from behind unseen to severely maul dog

Pit bull comes from behind unseen to severely maul dog

Name: Ron Manor
Victim: Pet
Location: Street, California
Year of attack: 2020

Tell us about the attack
We walked around the block with our dog, Boba, on a leash. Suddenly a pit bull came from behind and attacked Boba. The pit bull grabbed Boba in the stomach. It took a few seconds until I was able to kick the pit bull and make it let go of Boba who was bleeding a lot.

Then, I saw the pit bull trying to slink through a broken wooden gate right in front of where attack happened.

We rushed to the closest Vet. Emergency Hospital. After we had been told there was a 75% chance to live, we decided to pay the $9,669.00 estimated hospital bill that the vet wanted from us. I called the local police. They transferred me a few times until I got an Officer at the animal care center. The officer asked me to send him photos and details about the attack. I sent them. He replied once. Now, two days after, I am still waiting. Boba is out of the hospital and getting better.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I always thought pit bulls are a dangerous type of dog. Now I know for sure.

Legal Consequences
Nothing yet

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Pit bulls are an unpredictable type of dog. People should support the ending of breeding these animals.

Unprovoked pit bull attack while sitting on a curb

Unprovoked pit bull attack out of the blue

Name: Courtney Berman
Victim: Adult
Location: Sitting on the curb outside my mom house. Not facing the owner or dog. California
Year of attack: 2020

Tell us about the attack
On April 5th 2020 I was sitting on the curb outside my mom’s house on a phone call when something suddenly pulled me back onto the sidewalk. At first I wasn’t sure what it was. I thought maybe it was a person trying to get my attention, but as I turned around, I realized there was a huge pit bull, biting my tricep. I remember the pain as his teeth sunk into my skin. I remember being confused at first and thinking that maybe he was playing with me. I tried to move my arm, to shake him off, but he just kept biting me. Harder and harder. I remember looking up at the owner who also looked scared and realizing then that I was in danger. All I know is that it felt like it lasted forever. And I remember thinking as he dragged me into the street that if I didn’t get up, this pit bull was going to kill me.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I wake up every morning just to realize that what happened to me was not “just a dream”. And it’s always in those first few seconds, when the pain in my elbow starts to spread up my arm, and my right thigh-where the skin graft was taken starts to burn, that I realize, this is my new life. I’m grateful. Please don’t misunderstand. I am so incredibly grateful for the longest list of things. I’m grateful that I have my arm. That I can move my fingers. I’m grateful that more muscles and tendons were not permanently damaged. I’m grateful that the pit bull didn’t grab my neck. That he didn’t bite my face. And that he didn’t somehow manage to get on top of my body while I was laying helplessly on the floor. I know that I’m lucky. And there are these moments when I even feel it. Lucky.

Legal Consequences
The pit bull was euthanized.
