Victim: Pet
Location: On my farm, Texas
Year of attack: 2021

Tell us about the attack
We in Texas are going through this terrible freeze. I have managed to keep 3 mom exotic goats and their five 6 week old kids alive in the barn with a heat lamp for a week now, being told on local news that this weekend will be nice so they can finally return to their pen.

Yesterday February 17, 2021 at 5 PM, 3 pitbulls ripped the gate off the barn door, killed all the babies first, then ripped all the ears off the moms and 1 mom died within an hour, the other two, I will probably find deceased this morning. I bandaged them up the best I could, but with the weather, I can not get them medical attention.

This is the second time this has happened. It happened approximately 5 years ago, when 8 moms were killed that were ready to kid. I am devastated.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
It is difficult to sleep. I am considering giving up my small farm, which has been a great sense of joy for me.

The city I live in has grown leaps and bounds, but I let anyone with children come pet the kids and see the goats, as some children have never been that close to animals like this.

I am extremely sad and putting it mildly, so frustrated and disgusted with these owners of the large dogs and taking no responsibility for them!

Legal Consequences
Looking for owners.
Police report taken.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
I would like restitution for my goats, and have the owner of the dogs rights revoked for owning any more dogs, and that judgement followed up on.

Attack by pitbull mix in dog park

Name: AB
Victim: Adult, Pet
Location: Dog park, Massachusetts
Year of attack: 2020

Tell us about the attack

I brought a 9 month old 10 pound Pomeranian puppy to a dog park where a pitbull/lab mix descended on him and latched onto him. His owners were unable to pry him off and despite multiple people trying to pull his jaw open, he stayed latched on. I managed to get my fingers in between his incisors to prevent fatal injuries, but my dog still sustained substantial injuries and I had to go to emergency care for treatment on my hand.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Pitbulls may be sweet to their owners, but when they decide to attack/latch on to something, there’s very little anyone can do at that moment. Their jaw strength is deadly. No matter how “friendly” someone says their pitbull is, it’s the dog itself who decides whether it is wants to be friendly and who it wants to be friendly to.

Tale of Two Attacks

Name: Layne Huskins
Victim: Adult, Pet
Location: In our driveway, Florida
Year of attack: 2020

Tell us about the attack
First attack was mid October, 2020: Our two small morkies and my husband were in the garage (door was open). “Gage”, one of two of our neighbor’s newly adopted pitbulls ran from his home across the street, entered garage and had our small dog pinned down. My husband got between them and he was bitten on the leg. Bite marks noticeable but not punctured.

On Dec 29, 2020 they were again in the garage, husband was unloading groceries from car. “Gage” again ran full speed across the street and had Buddy in his jaws by neck and upper back, shaking him violently. The owner tried pulling him off to no avail. Husband again involved… had to actually kick Gage before he let go. Two serious bite wounds, kidney and tissue damage, fractured rib, surgery, 3 days in hospital, and $6000 later…nothing

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
We (as well as several other neighbors) must be alert at all times and will not walk our dogs by their house. We also have families with several small children on our street who are now on alert when they are walking or playing in front yard.

Legal Consequences
We are still undecided what course of action to take. We asked the owners several times to pay the medical….$6000 but they have only avoided us so far and not made any attempt to discuss with us.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Be aware if you have small pets, children if you or neighbor has a pit bull. It might be the dog is simply “playing” or “roughhousing” but don’t let your guard down….ever.

Justice for Paddington

Name: Ellie Mac
Victim: Pet
Location: Our back yard less than 3 ft. from our back door, Georgia
Year of attack: 2020

Tell us about the attack
My dog was attacked in our backyard, merely feet from our back door,by our neighbor’s pit bull. She was supposed to be watching her new beau’s dog, Sinister, but neglecting her job as he was at our back door when my spouse & our Goldendoodle Paddy walked outside. After waking up to the sound of my dog, not yet even 2 yrs full grown, wailing loudly in pain, I ran to the window above the source of the sounds, hoping to catch a glimpse of the sight so I could better discern what to expect if I ran down to Paddy, but I couldn’t see anything. Assuming my spouse to be dead, I tried to think of where my father’s firearm was (nobody was in the house but me), but I was frozen with fear. By the time I got dressed and my anxiety under control, Paddy’s cries had ceased, and I knew they were both dead.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
Though Paddington is still the most sociable and friendliest dog I've ever seen when it comes to his desire to play with other dogs and greet and get to know them, we now deny him that chance despite how sad it makes him because we are too scared of another attack. We now live next to people who we are considering taking to civil court, though we will not pursue this course because we both have the same landlord and do not wish to jeopardize my father's retirement living situation, and because the woman who was at fault for being negligent and allowing her boyfriend's dog to trespass onto our backyard claims to have a personal relationship with our shared landlord's family, we fear the landlord will choose to have my father and our household evicted (pandemic protocol not considered).

Legal Consequences
The owner was required to relinquish the pit bull for 10 days to animal control for our county for 10 days for an observation period. We spoke with the head of the department who said the dog showed no signs of rabies, which was the concern because the attack was completely unprovoked. Though Sinister did not have rabies, because his owner said this was his first sign of violence or attack in the 9 years he'd owned him, the county decided to allow the dog to be rehomed anywhere the owner wished and could prove. We do not know where Sinister lives now, whether or not there are children or other dogs on the property, but we know there are not any requirements prohibiting the dog from being around children or other dogs. The owner was not fined, and so far no civil action has been taken.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Have the courage to hold yourself accountable for your mistakes when they hurt others & don't offer to pay for all medical and veterinary expenses related to the attack only to renege as soon as you realize it will be much more than a mere euthanasia bill as you clearly assumed. My spouse's ability to think quickly on his feet and keep Sinister from reaching Paddy's throat saved his life for the duration of the onslaught, and I'm sorry the defensive wound Sinister incurred was necessary. I'm glad your children were not home to witness this. The bacteria Sinister transferred to Paddington's bloodstream via his bite caused a severe infection that almost killed him. The bills were over 5 grand, & it took a month for him to fight off the infections. Karma will come around, & you are awful folk

Even young pits can be vicious

Name: DB
Victim: Pet
Location: Walking dog around county road by my home., Colorado
Year of attack: 2020

Tell us about the attack
I take my 10 yr old Boston terrier and maltipoo puppy for daily walks. Anytime I see a dog unleashed or not contained by a fence I go the opposite direction and do not go that way again. This Saturday I saw a young pit in its yard with no fence. He was with young children and I immediately turned to go the opposite direction. The pitbull ran down his driveway and down the road to us and immediately started attacking my leased boston. I kicked and punched with all my might to get him off but the pit was latched on my bostons neck with my boston underneath him. I grabbed the pits collar and kept kicking and punching him and he got up and told him to “go home”! He stood there with his tail straight up and I knew he was going to come after me. The only thing that saved us was pepper spray.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
We have not gone for a walk since. I don’t feel safe to take them, I was screaming at the top of my voice at the dog and no one came out to help so guess I have to always be prepared to defend myself. I want to give them exercise but cant think of a safe place to walk them. Our boston is still recuperating from injuries and I have not heard from the deputy if anything was done. Thankfully I had the pepper spray or the pit would have started up again. I have a hard time getting to sleep now, just reliving the event seeing my boston gurgling while the pit was locked onto his neck! Very traumatic!! I do carry a gun but was told I would have received a misdemeanor if I would have shot him, plus I don’t think I could have shot him anyway. Maybe I will get a tazer.

Legal Consequences
I called the sheriffs office and they said the officer was unable to locate. That is all that was done, I am stuck with the vet bill.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Please know that this can happen and have a plan. I had pepper spray in my fanny pack and was able to get to it and spray the pit in the eyes which made him run off. Before spraying him he was staring me down with his tail straight up which means he thought he was in control and ready to fight. (What the internet said)

Little Stevie

Name: Toby
Victim: Pet
Location: Apartment Complex in Winter Park, Florida
Year of attack: 2020

Tell us about the attack
Our little Cockapoo “Stevie” was mauled to death by an unleashed pit bull as we left the elevator. We attempted to fight off the dog but Stevie died in my arms moments later.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
My son said he will miss the years of loving experiences we were supposed to have. Stevie was only 12 weeks old. We were both traumatized and are now in therapy with a psychiatrist who concluded we have PTSD. This was the most violent event I ever experienced.

Legal Consequences
Orange County FL…sad…couldn’t even take the hell hound…however the owners, who lacked any remorse, surrendered the dog to animal control. The apartment complex is avoiding responsibility even though they were aware of an illegal dog living in the building. Stevie is viewed by law as property but to us he was family.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
This was senseless…no leash on the pit bull.

Pea the Mighty Toy Poodle

Name: Penny S.
Victim: Pet
Location: My front yard, Ohio
Year of attack: 2015

Tell us about the attack
All of my animals are rescues, a motley bunch. I adopted Pea when he was 9, a senior toy poodle. He came in and took over. He was the smallest and oldest, but that didn’t matter, he was in charge. My neighbor had a pit bull that wanted to fight my son’s lab, Pea’s accepted pack member. One morning I was filling the birdbath in the backyard, when the dogs took off around the side of the house, barking. Thinking they were going to chase a cat into the woods, I followed. As I came around the corner, I heard an animal shriek. The neighbor’s dog was shaking Pea by the front leg. Pea had jumped between the lab and the pit, to save his pack member. When the dog saw me, he dropped Pea and ran. Pea survived, with a broken jaw and radial leg fracture. Still pack leader, he was 14 then.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I am very vigilant in restricting pit bulls on my property. I’ve lost friends who believe I’m a dog racist. I had a tenant who had an illegal pit bull, I made him get rid of it. He posted my name and address online, I received death threats and worse, had to get the sheriff. I’ll never stop speaking out against bully breeds, no matter what happens.

Legal Consequences
The pit bull was gone by the time I got home from the emergency vet, it was a Sunday. They thought I’d demand it be put down. They did pay the vet bill, over time. They moved later, and I heard they took the dog back. It had a habit of running away (not neutered), and even though they lived 15 miles away, once the dog showed up here. The owner came and got it, but eventually it disappeared for good.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
These dogs are not like other dogs. They want to fight, no matter how loving they appear. They are dangerous because they look like other dogs. They are unstable. Most times the animal or person they go after is their owner or a member of their owner’s family. This cannot be loved or socialized out of them. They select their victim, and that’s it.
