Wooden gate outside house

Pit bull mauls builder, household insurance exclusion on pit bulls denies medical expenses for victim

Name: Rodney H.
Victim: Adult
Location: Back yard of lawn customer, Georgia
Year of attack: May 2022

Tell us about the attack

On May 19, 2022, at approximately 12:00 EST, I arrived at a client’s home. The woman answered the door with one pit bull and another unknown breed dog. I inquired if the dogs were an issue. She stated they were not. She then came outside (leaving the two dogs inside) to instruct me on what services she wanted. She went back inside. I worked in the back yard (privacy fence/w small gate). I finished and started the front. She then came outside to inform me she was going to get cash and would be right back. And she did. Paid me, and then stated she had to go pick up her small child from school. I told her to go ahead but I had yet to finish and had things to collect. She left. I finished, and went to retrieve items from the back. The pit bull then mauled me for ten minutes. A neighbor called 911. The ER visit required extensive stitches.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
Tremendously! I fear death around every corner now. I see it in everything I do. I opt staying home for safety reasons now.

Legal Consequences

The pit bull that attacked me was quarantined the day of the attack but returned to the owners after the ten day holding period.

I took legal action, however, a clause in their homeowner’s policy dictates an exclusion if anyone is attacked by a pit bull. Therefore my legal team dropped their effort. I have my complete file of documentation, including report on police who responded, Animal Control people who responded and EMS documentation. I also have photos of my injuries.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Again, due to the clause in the pit bull owner’s homeowner’s insurance policy, I have collected $0 towards my medical bills. This is an injustice to an innocent human being.

Princess, one of the dogs who was killed by pit bulls

Pit bulls break into house, slaughter dogs in their own home

Name: Sara S.
Victim: Pet
Location: In the home in Indiana
Year of attack: December 2020

Tell us about the attack

Saturday morning I got the most heart-wrenching call from my mom. She was screaming and crying, all she could get out was a mumbled sentence, something along the lines of “I just wanted to let you know those pit bulls broke into the house, I think Douglas, Princess (her dogs), and Tanner (her cat) are dead”.

Three pit bulls that lived down the street had came onto her property and INSIDE her home while she was not home. She came home to a BLOODY MESS and her house was so tore up. The pictures are seriously gut-wrenching, blood smeared all over furniture and walls and carpet and a few things even broken. She came eye-to-eye with the three pit bulls standing inside her own home and just could see blood everywhere and didn’t know what to do or think. She dropped the groceries she was carrying and ran back to her car and called my aunt and uncle to come over because she was so scared.

They found her two dogs Douglas and Princess hiding in the bathroom and thought Douglas was already dead because he looked so tore up but shortly after I got a call saying he was still alive and they were headed to Blue Pearl Pet Hospital with them.

Unfortunately Douglas had to be put to sleep upon arrival as he suffered from a potential broken shoulder, back, and neck PLUS all of the bite wounds. He was suffering too much.

We thought Princess was going to be alright, but they soon realized the bite wounds were worse than they initially thought. The vet said the bite on her neck was the worst she’s ever seen. They thought her canine tooth was missing but turns out it was lodged into her nasal cavity from trying to fight for their lives so hard. They got her all stitched up and she was swollen all over, but her oxygen levels were dropping over night so this morning she was unfortunately put to sleep as well.

Tanner the cat ended up showing back up. We believe he hid under the dresser and the pit bulls were too distracted by Douglas and Princess to notice him.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?

Tanner is definitely traumatized.  He constantly watches the door to see if those pit bulls are coming back. If he hears ANY noise, he runs and hides.

Both Douglas and Princess were loved by so many people. Princess was technically my brother’s family dog. When they moved here from Florida my mom kept her for them until they got a home suitable for her. My nieces weren’t ready to lose their dog before they even got to bring her home with them again.

Douglas was our family dog growing up, when my parents split he lived with my dad and would follow him out to the garage 24/7 and come home covered in grease. That was his baby. My dad is no longer alive and Douglas was one of our last connections with him. ☹️ After he passed Doug moved back in with my mom, and spent the rest of his life there. I’ll miss my yappy pup so very much.

Legal Consequences

I’m not sure what is happening with the pit bulls yet, but I promise you my family will get justice for these babies. This is not the first incident with these pit bulls around our neighborhood.

Old Jack Russell dog

Pit bulls eviscerate elderly, blind dog

Name: NC
Victim: Adult, Pet
Location: Street, Florida
Year of attack: 2022

Tell us about the attack

On November 3rd, 2022, I was out walking my elderly, blind 27 lb. Jack Russell Terrier on a leash. We walked past a house with a fence behind which there were two barking dogs. A woman opened the gate, and two unleashed, uncollared pit bulls rushed out.

No one was aware there were pit bulls in our community. They are not allowed.

The pit bulls immediately came after my dog and me. I tried to pick my dog up, but the pit bulls started biting both of us and I was thrown to the ground. They ripped my dog’s intestines out and kept attacking her and me until they killed her.

I was taken to the hospital with multiple dog bites.

Animal Control did not take the illegal pit bulls, but left them with their owner in the community.  They were still there in the community as of when I wrote this, December 11th, 2022. The pit bulls also proved to be unvaccinated.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
My life will never be the same. Witnessing your baby being viciously murdered is something that will never leave me. It’s a reoccurring flash back etched in my mind. I now suffer PTSD and have a severed nerve in my left Achilles.

I lost my best friend.

Legal Consequences

It turned out that a house owner in the community had rented his home out, and it was the female tenant who brought the pit bulls into our community. My HOA is taking legal steps to fine the homeowner, who did not follow protocol for renting his unit out, and have his tenants evicted.

The pit bull owner herself was issued fines but has the right to appeal the decision. I am waiting for that decision. Any money from fines won’t come to me, anyway.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Never trust pit bulls.

Mini Aussie

A repeat-offender pit bull ripped my mini Aussie pup’s leg off at the shoulder

Name: VL
Victim: Adult, Pet
Location: County Road, Arkansas
Year of attack: 2022

Tell us about the attack

I was walking my six-month-old mini Aussie, training for cold weather hiking. I heard dogs growling. I reined my puppy into my right, and had her sit. The other of the other dogs — which were pit bulls — told me one dog wouldn’t bother me, but the other was vicious. Then she instructed me to ‘hold your dog and don’t look at him’ (meaning her vicious dog.) Thinking the owner knew her dog, I complied. WORST MISTAKE. I never saw her pit bull break the leash, and even when he attacked me it didn’t register what was going on. It tore my dog’s leg off at the shoulder and dragged us down the side of the mountain. I called 911 and my neighbors. We were rescued. My puppy went to a surgical vet hospital and me to an ER. I was bitten 6-8 times, my puppy was in surgery for three hours. She survived thank God! The pit bull had attacked 2 other dogs previously; I was the first human.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?

I have never ever dealt with anything like this! I am in therapy for paralyzing panic attacks. My puppy loves everyone — humans and dogs. But she startles easily.

This  entire incident was preventable if the pit bull owners had only complied with a previous HOA ruling that the pit bull was to be muzzled every time it was off their home property! Instead she played the consummate victim — each of the previous attacks in her mind had always been the other dogs’ fault. She even went so far as to state that this time my puppy started it by barking. Realize we were 20 feet away, uphill in fact. And my puppy was in my arms.

She can not carry a litter of puppies due to the weight as she struggles with balance now that she only has one front leg. She also is taking meds to help preserve the joints in her remaining legs due to the additional stress.

Legal Consequences

The pit bull owner put her pit bull down and was issued a citation for owning a vicious dog. Currently I am pursuing restitution for my and my dog’s doctor/hospital bills and all costs relating to this attack.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?

NEVER EVER TRUST SOMEONE WHEN THEY TELL YOU ABOUT THEIR PIT BULL’S BEHAVIOR!! Protect yourself first and foremost! And your pet if they are with you.

Farmyard gate

Repeated attacks by pit bulls over the years

Name: Pam
Victim: Other Livestock and Horses
Location: Multiple attacks on my farms in Georgia and Florida
Year of attack: 2014

Tell us about the attack

In 1984, I had a pit bull jump in my VW bug to attack my lab in my lap. I got stitches in my leg, and a Fed Ex Driver got a shoulder injury trying to get me out of the car.

I’ve had years of pit bull attacks on my livestock in three different states because renter neighbors owned pit bulls. Pit bulls killed my sheep in Longwood, Florida in 1998. In  2008 to 2011 a neighbor’s pit bulls killed my poultry and mauled my hogs and dogs several times. In 2012 to 2015, a neighbor’s pit bulls killed my goats and chickens and mauled several horses. In 2014, even after police talked to the pit bull’s owner, the  same day one of the pit bulls mauled my horse while a kid was riding it.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
Literally you get PTSD after trying to stop a pit attack. You can not unsee the horrors. I will not get out of my truck if I pull up and pit bulls are walking around.

The sheriff told me defend my livestock and now I do. The pit owners stay away from my farm. I no longer tolerate them.

Legal Consequences

After most of the attacks, the pit owners did nothing and the police did nothing. After one attack on my horse, the pit bull came back under a fence and jumped on an officer’s leg to attack, she still did nothing to the pit owner.

I had court date in 2014 for a pit attack on one of my horses. The pit owner paid the vet bill but still the attack ruined the horse. It was a good roping horse, but the attack scarred her for life. I sold her at a fraction of what I had paid. I lost thousands.

In 2015, I sued a pit owner on Judge Judy over killing my goats.  My episode on Judge Judy was called “Goats Scream Bloody Murder” (S19.E163). It aired on March 3rd, 2015. Judge Judy awarded me damages for my dead goats. The pit owner lost her job and moved out of town. But after Judge Judy, other pit owners rode by with pits in truck beds like a parade to try to intimidate me lol. They really do not care if their pits destroy lives. It’s sad.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?

Pit bull owners do not and will not care for your pets, livestock or your family’s safety. They do not believe the breed is a danger and when they are wrong and you suffer a loss, they shrug.

They typically rent and do not own anything for you to sue over, but the law is on your side. They are responsible for controlling their poor choice in a dog and are liable for damages. Call police early and often. Make a paper trail to establish dangerous dog status so the pit owners can be held responsible.

Ban the breed, keep everyone safe!

City street

I was severely mauled by two pit bulls just while out for a daily exercise walk

Name: Angelo D.
Victim: Adult
Location: On the sidewalk, Nebraska
Year of attack: 2020

Tell us about the attack

Two weeks before my birthday, I was attacked by two loose pit bulls.

I had gone for my evening exercise walk and was about two blocks from my home when two vicious pit bulls jumped on me, knocked me down, and started chewing on my head, arms, and legs. I was absolutely mauled. The entire attack lasted 15 minutes.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?

I’ve received three surgeries to date. I’ve struggled with anxiety, panic attacks, and depression as a result of the pit bulls attacking me. I lost my job because I physically was unable to perform the physical duties anymore.

Legal Consequences

The owner of the pit bulls had to surrender the animals. They were euthanized because even the animal shelter deemed them too aggressive and dangerous.

I hired a lawyer and sued the owner of the pit bulls and won the case.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?

Be aware of your surroundings; pit bulls are everywhere now. It is never a bad idea to carry a weapon to protect yourself when you are alone. Be thankful for every breath you have. Life is precious.

Maltese shih tzu pup

A pit bull took my sweet pup from me

Name: Shannon Squire
Victim: Pet
Location: Apartment Community Dog Park, Florida
Year of attack: November 2022

Tell us about the attack

My sweet 12 lb. Maltese shih tzu, Janson, had just turned 4. We were in the unleashing area of my apartment’s dog park when a pit bull charged through the gate, grabbing, mauling and shaking Janson to death in front of me.

Pit bulls are banned in my apartment complex. It belonged to a 23-year-old girl who had rescued it after finding it dumped in a parking lot three weeks prior. Her boyfriend grabbed the pit bull by the neck, punching it in the face over and over and it would still not release my dog. This attack went on for several minutes and there was no stopping this pit bull. Neighbors heard screams and came to help, to no avail.

A neighbor rushed me to the vet where Janson was confirmed dead.

My sweet Janson had done nothing to provoke this. He was targeted by this pit bull as prey.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?

It’s been three weeks and I picture the attack every time I close my eyes or even try and remember happy memories with my dog. Janson was everything to me. I took him everywhere. I am depressed and struggle through every single day. I can’t get through the day without bursting into tears at any time, no matter where I am. My relationship is now suffering because I cannot focus on anything else.

I’m afraid of pit bulls and want to move to a country where they are banned and I’m scared to get another dog and have this happen again.

I feel I can’t even tell Janson’s story because pit bull apologists on social media, in denial about what pit bulls are capable of, viciously threaten you for speaking up and telling your story.

Legal Consequences
The pit bull owner was told by the leasing office to remove the dog from the apartment complex but faced no other consequence. I’ve spoken to police officers and four lawyers who say there is nothing I can do aside from spending hundreds of dollars bringing the owner to small claims court to try to sue for financial replacement of my dog.

The pit bull owner claims she took the pit bull to be put down but there’s no way of confirming and the leasing office told me it’s “nobody’s business” as long as they’ve confirmed the pit bull is gone. She’s been rude and callous and washes her hands of any responsibility, claiming she is not at fault since she “didn’t command her pit bull to attack” Janson.

There isn’t a single law in Florida to hold this person accountable, even after she deliberately introduced an aggressive breed which she had no background knowledge of into an apartment community where they are banned.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Pit bulls are dangerous, unpredictable animals. Rules banning them in certain housing communities exist for a reason but pit bull owners just don’t care.

This could happen to anyone. An adult, a child, or another dog, but it seems there will be no real consequences for pit bull owners.

We need to listen to victims of pit bulls, look at statistics, and introduce laws that hold real legal ramifications for owners of pit bulls. Most renters and homeowners insurance policies don’t cover these breeds for a reason. Laws forbid you from driving a car that doesn’t have insurance. Why are there no laws that forbid people from leaving their house with this aggressive breed?

Nurse sitting on floor

Trauma-room nurse speaks: life flight required after 2-year-old boy severely mauled by family pit bull

Name: RRT
Victim: Child
Location: Home, North Carolina
Year of attack: 2022

Tell us about the attack

I work in the emergency room of a rural hospital and witnessed the aftermath of a mauling caused by a pit bull. The victim was a 2-year-old little boy who had the majority of his cheek ripped off and his left ear partially severed. The victim had to be airlifted out of our hospital due to the extensive nature of his injuries and the doctor’s suspicion that a facial nerve had been severed due to left-sided facial drooping. Truly a horrific thing to witness. The pit bull belonged to the boyfriend of the boy’s mother.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I see trauma cases but seeing the cheek tissue of a little boy hanging off his face was very hard to witness.

Legal Consequences
Unknown

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Pit bulls should not be allowed around small children

Hole in wire border fence

Two pit bulls broke through my fence and mauled my dog to death

Name: Jordan
Victim: Pet, Other
Location: In my yard., Oregon
Year of attack: November 2022

Tell us about the attack

I let my dog, Pippa, outside to do her business in my front yard. It is completely fenced in and she doesn’t wander and I have never had an issue. I went to let her back in after 10 minutes and found her bleeding on my front doorstep and my neighbor’s two pit bulls running away. My husband and I rushed her to the vet, holding the skin of her neck and scalp on with my bare hands as she bled all over me. She didn’t make it after they tried to save her for several hours.

The pit bulls had made a hole in my fence and walked over half a mile from the gate to my house to attack my dog. I watched the security footage from my cameras and all Pippa did was try to run away and hide. At one point she crawls under my car and the pit bulls pull her back out and brutally attack her over and over.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?
I am traumatized. I lost my best friend in the worst way possible, something she didn’t deserve. I no longer feel safe in my yard. I can’t leave my house and see the area she was attacked without breaking down. I haven’t left my bed in the three weeks since it happened.

Legal Consequences
Still working on it with animal control.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Pit bulls are not misunderstood. Dogs were bred for certain characteristics and pit bulls are bred for fighting, mauling and killing. The only people that seem to “misunderstand” that are pit bull owners. Dog breed prejudice doesn’t exist: we created them to be this way.

I am not advocating to euthanize all pit bulls, but I do agree with the control laws other countries have made: requiring special licenses to own them, euthanize them in shelters, and mandatory sterilization till they eventually disappear.

Pit bull attack in airport restroom

Name: Susan Baker
Victim: Adult, Pet
Location: Airport women’s restroom in Las Vegas, Nevada
Year of attack: 2022

Tell us about the attack

In November 2022, we were looking at houses one weekend in Las Vegas and staying with friends. We had our four-pound Yorkie, Thom, with us. I went into the restroom, used the toilet, and went to wash my hands. I had Thom in my arms, in his harness and leash. As I turned to wash my hands, a huge pit bull jumped on me, bashing my head against the edge of the tile wall.

The pit bull then pulled Thom right out of his harness and began mauling him. The pit bull owner, a woman, who had brought her pit bull into the restrooms, did nothing to stop it, and acted as though she didn’t care what happened to us.

I started screaming so loudly that my partner came running in to help.  We rushed Thom to an emergency vet, and from the vet office I went to the hospital via paramedics.

How has your life changed as a result of the attack?

Our lives will never be the same.

I am 71 years old and was just diagnosed with lung cancer before the attack.

I suffered a severe head injury from being bashed into the wall, and because of it had to cancel the scheduled lung cancer surgery. I was bruised from the whole side of my face and body down to my right knee. I suffer constant headaches. The attack and its knock-on consequences may ultimately cost me my life.

Thom will be ten years old on Dec. 5th, 2022, but will never be the same. He suffered a broken jaw, broken ribs, a mutilated eye and multiple bite marks that needed stitches.

Our medical bills from the attack are now over $4,000.

I am terrified of everything now.

Legal Consequences

The pit bull owner, a woman, was homeless and just walked off with her pit bull. All airport security did was take a picture of her driver’s license. That’s it.

She paid nothing for any of the medical bills. Nothing.

What would you like people to know as a result of your attack?
Do not own a pit bull. Do not go near them. You are not safe anywhere on this earth until these monsters are all gone.
